What is the difference between Stellar and lumens?

Stellar can be confusing to new users because its terminology is very different from other supported cryptocurrencies in the Blockchain Wallet. While other assets share their names with their respective networks (e.g. Bitcoin, the network, and bitcoin, the cryptocurrency), Stellar’s native asset has a completely different name: lumen (plural lumens), or XLM.

These terms are not interchangeable. Stellar refers only to the network as a whole, to the protocol, and to the system and community. Lumens (XLM) is the currency that powers the network, which users can send and receive, and use to carry out exchanges between other currencies.
